SQL Server Version History

It all began in the 1980's

in 1989 there is no db product for Microsoft.
Microsoft signed deal to license Sybase's Dataserver.

The first version of SQL Server was released in 1989
Ver 1.O shipping in May, 1989
Ver 1.1 included support for windows 3.O
 --sybase goes public in 1991
Ver 4.21 in 1992 still licence by sybase
SQL95 was released in 1995 with replication feature.
SQL server 6.5 in 1996 ANSI standard complaint, still old sybase code.
SQL Server 7.O in 1998 no more sybase. with features of data transformation services, row level locking, OLAP services.
SQL Server 2000 in 2000 built for windows server 2000 features of OLAP analysis services, reporting services.
SQL Server 2005 launch with MS .net and windows server 2003
-SQL CLR, integration services,reporting services, mirroring,XML integration, schema.
SQL Server 2008 built for  windows server 2008 features of Transparent data encryption,management policies,Geo-spatial data and data types,file-stream, backup compression.
SQL Server 2008 R2 in 2010 - built for win server 2008 R2, master data services, stream insight, Unicode compression,power-pivot, report builder 3.0.
SQL Server 2012 build with win server 2012
- built for win server 2012, always on, coloumstore indexes,user defined server roles.
SQL Server 2014 build for win server 2012 R2 - in-memory OLTP, involvement of column store indexes, allows for using super-fast SSD drives for buffers, more AlwaysON secondaries.
